Mama’s Cookin’

Seriously. Mom’s just cook the best food.

German food is generally not the healthiest – full of butter, meat, cheese, and all those good things. The fam jam tries to be pretty healthy, but sometimes good ol’ German cooking is necessary.

Here are some eats since I have been home.

SOUP! Mama makes the best soup. In this guy we have all sorts of goodness: barley, beans, carrots, and chicken (to name a few).

Pfannenkuchen. Or shall I say, German pancakes. They are essentially a crepe. So delicious.

Along with some homemade canned deliciousness :) Peaches and Cherries.

I also had a smoothie yesterday because I felt like I have hardly had any veggies since I have been here. White flour has been a staple in the last couple of days which generally doesn’t make it onto my plate more than once or twice a month.

I added some of this because well, I figured this should make up for my lack of veggies ;)

Today Dora and I went into town and stopped at a local bakery. YUM :)

We got home and made a real German meal. Gulasch (stew), spaetzle (egg noodles), and salad.

I love making the noodles the most. So much fun and who makes their own noodles these days? – definitely a rarity if you ask me!

noodlesMy favourite bits are the ones that stick together in the boiling process, they generally look like this :) So scrumptious. Imagine a big ball of dough in your mouth, sounds awful but its so goooooodddd!

Needless to say, I have eaten more white flour and all sorts of other goodness in the past 3 days than I have in the past 2 months. I’m perfectly okay with it :)

Happy Tuesday!

I could live off of spaetzle with butter on top…and gravy even? and red cabbage and rouladen! Sometimes you just need the good stuff aka white flour! It’s gonna kill ya and life is too short not to thoroughly enjoy it once and awhile right! PLUSSSSS with all the running…it balances it all out :) Totally wish I were there to eat with you…ahah

Tasty cooking indeed! :) I love spaetzle! This is all about some good & decent tasty food!

Perfect running fuel!! I love that you call your parents by their first names. Is that a normal German tradition?? I used to try and call my mom by her first name and she snapped at me..hahaha. Yum to those crepe like pancakes!

Thats weird isn’t it, calling my parents by my first names? hahaha Definitely not a German thing. I only call my mom by her first name when I am talking to people, and blogging apparently? But never to her face?! DOUBLE WEIRD! I think its because my friends are really good friends with my mom, and they always call her Dora and now it kinda stuck! :D

  4. I’ve always wanted to make my own noodles. I’ve been looking through Pinterest and trying to find some almond flour pasta recipes to experiment on my dad :) I’d totally eat that pasta dough too!

Yum. That soup looks delicious. Love the steam. I always have a hard time taking a picture of my soup when it’s just done being cooked, because the steam just fogs up my camera lens :D

    • Britta says:

I know, sometimes its hard to find flour alternatives to make pasta!! But its definitely worth a shot. The ones we made were surprisingly easy.. but thats probably because my mom knew what she was doing. I would have definitely failed on my own!

Smoothie in a bowl sounds like a clever idea! And I’m sure that SuperFood stuff is helping out in vitamins and nutrients department, haha :P !

  6. Everything looks delish! I love smoothies in a bowl and live on them all summer.
Those pancakes look divine! I’d love some for brekkie tomorrow!
